I struggled with what to write in this space this week. Since my last post, Alex Pretti was murdered, Greg Bovino left Minnesota, protests have gotten larger and louder and more insistent. The tear gas keeps flying, people keep getting detained, and neighbors keep helping neighbors. Journalists are now getting arrested. My friends, I am at a loss for words so much of the time right now. The fear that gnaws at my stomach, that clenches my heart, pushes language out of the way so something more primal erupts. There is sorrow, deep sorrow, over the state of our country in this moment.

These January Days

Things feel scattered and disjointed everywhere. There is so much uncertainty. My friends talk about the uneasiness they feel as this year lurches forward. This post is a little disjointed, too, and yet these things I’ve written about do all go together – they are part of what comprises this start to 2025. Lives unfold with little certainty that our days will be what we’d planned, even though we like to think our plans are exactly what is going to happen.

Fixing Doors, Unlocking Minds

Opening a closed mind is a lot harder than opening a broken garage door. At least with a garage door, the broken spring is unmistakable. The rusty cable is right there in front of you. You remove the broken bits, replace them, re-engage the opener, and voila.

Breathless in July

This summer has not been typical in Minnesota and I’m not spending as much time outside as I’d like thanks to the wildfire smoke drifting over all of us.

Unacceptable

Following news of the mass shooting at Michigan State University, Valentine’s Day felt very un-Valentine-y. There has to be a way out of this vise-grip of an idea that America’s freedom is entwined with the ability of every single person to have access to firearms.
